Chairs, Department of Geology and Geophysics
Betty Bunce: Acting Chair several times in 70's and 80's. She was the first American woman to serve as chief scientist on a major oceanographic expedition, including several legs of the Indian Ocean Expedition in 1964. In 1971 she led a team on the RV Chain for surveys of future scientific drilling sites in the Indian Ocean.
Earl Ewing Hays: 1967-1969. Earl Hays came to work with J. Brackett Hersey in 1957. He was made Chair of the newly formed Dept. of Applied Oceanography which oversaw the design, construction and testing of the DSRV Alvin. He was appointed Chair of the Geology and Geophysics Department in 1967 and then in 1971 he was made Chair of the Ocean Engineering Dept.
John Brackett Hersey: 1963-1966 First Chairman of the Geology and Geophysics Dept. A former PhD student of Maurice 'Doc' Ewing he came to Woods Hole in 1946 and remained with the Institution for more than 20 years. In 1963, he was made the first Chairman of the Geology and Geophysics Department, a position he formally held until 1968. Hersey took a leave of absence in 1966 to work for the Office of Naval Research. He resigned from WHOI in 1968. During his leave of absence Dr. Earl Hays stepped in as Dept. Chair.
